In a highly anticipated decision on June 17, 2025, the Supreme Court moved to uphold a Tennessee ban on medical sexual reassignment for minors. The Tennessee law bans surgeries and hormonal therapies that would allow a child to medically transition to a sex different from their sex at birth. Critics argue that the legislation is discriminatory on the basis of sex and in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The court found that the law engages no sex-based classification scheme and that the ban is a legitimate exercise of the state’s regulatory authority.
